Meet the artist | Nina Cueva

Introducing our resident gem curator, Sydney-based Nina Cueva.

She's often found deep in conversation with a visitor at our Strand store,  guiding them through her dazzling curation of Australian gemstones as they sparkle in the majestic daylight. 

Having co-founded Courtesy of the Artist 16 years ago, Nina is as passionate about stories as she is about gemstones. Her warm, intuitive approach makes the custom-design process a breeze, and she delights in connecting each bespoke client with the perfect artist and thus, the perfect piece.

You may have seen Nina around lately: she was featured in the Strand's 130-year campaign celebrating the diverse artisans that make up the Strand community.

Paired together with Paul Mendels, fourth generation owner of the Nut Shop since 1939 these unlikely like-minds sat down to muse about their shared appreciation for all things handmade.

'I am drawn to the Australian parti sapphire because of its uniqueness. When the light hits these beautiful gemstones, the colour play always puts a smile on my face.'

'I handpicked this perfectly round parti sapphire (pictured above) for our Rare Earth Australian Made Collection. Measuring 7.17ct, it was found in Rubyvale, Queensland and faceted here in Australia by a master cutter.

The hues of this beautiful stone exhibit a stunning spectrum of teal and various greens with flashes of chartreuse.' 

'It is so enjoyable what I do, because it is so much more than jewellery. It is about connecting with each client, and helping to tell their stories in a beautiful way. I get so much joy when their eyes light up after helping them find the perfect gemstone.

Once these bespoke pieces are complete, I love watching the reactions of my clients as they come to collect their jewellery.

I am grateful and feel so lucky to be seeing people at the happiest times of their lives.'

Saturdays 10am-4pm AEST
